I've found that most of my favorite writing falls in-between the academic and personal genres, mixing some of the techniques and conventions of both. This type of writing also models what I hope to do in my career in policy work; writing with a clear purpose and action oriented, while still engaged with a larger community.
One of the best examples of my in-between genre is my personal statement for law school. While challenging to produce, I like this essay because I am able to use argumentation skills, but to advocate for myself. My capstone project, The Candid Application Project, also falls into this category. With this project I ask people to reflect on how they represent themselves in applications, with the goal of adding complexity to their writing and humanizing the application process.
